14 June 2017: Joint Oral Statement during the 35th Session of the Human Rights Council

On 14 June 2017, a Joint Oral Statement was delivered during the 35th Session of the Human Rights Council on behalf of 17 organizations.

The Statement remarked the the increasing recognition of the fundamental role of Human Rights Education for preventing and addressing current global challenges. Stronger synergies between programmes of UN agencies, intergovernmental entities and governments are necessary.

In this context, the NGO Working Group organized a seminar that brought together the States Platform on Human Rights Education and Training and UNESCO the Office of the High Commissioner, UNODC and civil society, to address the complementarity and coordination of the various programmes.

10 March 2017: Joint Oral Statement 34th Session of the Human Rights Council

On 10 March 2017, a Joint Oral Statement ‘The World Programme for Human Rights Education, Implementation of the Third phase’ was delivered on behalf of 25 organizations, during the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council.

The Statement stressed the key role of the World Programme for Human Rights Education as an essential tool for implementing the UN Declaration, by providing a concrete framework for action and by strengthening partnerships and cooperation at all levels.

It emphasized also that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) had invited all Member States and National Human Rights Institutions to submit information on national implementation of the third phase of the World Programme and urged all Member States to contribute their national feedback.

14 September 2016: Joint Oral Statement 33rd Session of the Human Rights Council

A joint NGOs oral statement on behalf of 15 organizations was delivered at the plenary of the 33rd session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The NGOs recommended to States the inclusion of Human Rights Education in all their reports to United Nations human rights treaty bodies and agencies; to focus on implementation of human rights education within other global education initiatives such as Education First or Global Citizenship Education, among others; and to obtain stronger synergy among initiatives of UN agencies, intergovernmental entities and governments.

29 February – 24 March 2016: Joint Oral Statement 31st Session of the Human Rights Council

A joint NGOs oral statement was delivered at the plenary of the 31st session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The NGOs emphasized the importance of review and monitoring mechanisms at national level and welcomed the report of OHCHR on the Evaluation of the implementation of the second phase of the World Programme for Human Rights Education.

September 2015: Joint oral statement Evaluation of the Second Phase of the World Programme for Human Rights Education

A joint NGO oral statement of 15 co-signatory organisations was delivered at the plenary of the 30th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The NGO WG on HREL welcomed the report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on the Evaluation of the implementation of the second phase of the World Programme for Human Rights education – A/HRC/30/24 – and its positive impact on national initiatives and congratulate States which have undertaken action plans since the beginning of the Programme in 2005.
