18 September 2018: Side Event titled “World Programme for Human Rights Education towards the Fourth phase: Empowering youth to building just, peaceful and resilient societies.”

During the 39th session of the Human Rights Council, the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning organized a side event titled: “World Programme for Human Rights Education, Fourth Phase: Empowering youth to building just, peaceful and resilient societies” co-sponsored by the States Platform on Human Rights Education and Training (comprising Brazil, Costa Rica, Italy, Morocco, The Philippines, Senegal, Slovenia and Thailand) and  UNESCO Geneva Liaison Office.

Around 50 people from governments, UN agencies and NGOs attended the side event.

During the side event a new tool to promote Human Rights Education targeting especially young people, was launched.

6 March 2018: Side Event on the World Programme for Human Rights Education: What focus for the fourth phase?

During the 37th session of the Human Rights Council, the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning organized a side-event entitled “World Programme for Human Rights Education – What focus for the fourth phase?”. The event took place at the UN, Geneva and was co-sponsored by the UN Member States Platform on Human Rights Education and Training and the UNESCO Liaison Office in Geneva.

The objectives of the panel discussion were:
1. To bring and share the views of the different stakeholders, including Member States, relevant intergovernmental organizations, and civil society, regarding the focus of the fourth phase of the World Programme.
2. Take this opportunity to address progress and challenges regarding the on-going third phase of the World Programme which aims to strengthen the implementation of the first two phases and to promote human rights training for media professionals and journalists.

Speakers included representatives from UNESCO, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Permanent Mission of Italy, National Human Rights Institutions, and civil society.

30 May 2017: Seminar ‘How can Human Rights Education and Training be promoted through 2030 Agenda, especially Target 4.7?’

On 30 May 2017,  the NGO Working on Human Rights Education and Learning organized  a seminar entitled ‘How can Human Rights Education and Training be promoted through the 2030 Agenda, especially target 4.7?’ and was co-sponsored by the States Platform on Human Rights Education and Training in the Human Rights Council (Brazil, Costa Rica, Italy, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Slovenia and Thailand) and UNESCO Geneva Liaison Office.

This seminar took place before the 35th session of the Human Rights Council, in connection with the publication of OHCHR’s report on the high-level panel discussion for the 5th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training. As a contribution to the panel discussion, the NGO WG on HREL had made specific recommendations, including on the need for stronger  synergies among initiatives of UN agencies, other intergovernmental entities and governments in the field of human rights education.
Around 80 participants including governments, UN agencies, NGOs and academic institutions attended the seminar, whose objectives were:

  1. To review different initiatives related to human rights education carried
    out at the international level, to examine their content and complementarity;
  2. To provide an update on the status of the various programs in 2017;
  3. To focus on human rights education within these initiatives and programs.

6 March 2017: Launch of the exhibition ‘Transforming Lives: The Power of Human Rights Education’ in the United Nations Office, Geneva.

On 6th March 2017 during the 35th session of the Human Rights Council, a new exhibition entitled ‘Transforming Lives: The Power of Human Rights Education’ was launched at the United Nations Office in Geneva.

The exhibition raises awareness of the role of human rights education in promoting dignity, equality and peace, and preventing human rights violations and abuses.

The exhibition is co-organized by Soka Gakkai International (SGI), HRE 2020, the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning, and the states comprising the Platform for Human Rights Education and Training (Brazil, Costa Rica, Italy, Morocco, the Philippines, Senegal, Slovenia, Switzerland and Thailand), with thanks to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

25 September 2015: Side Event on ‘Human Rights Education and Training: Achievements and Perspectives’

On 25 September 2015, the NGO WG on HREL co-sponsored the side event organized by the Platform for Human Rights Education and Training, comprised of Costa Rica, Italy, Morocco, Philippines, Senegal, Slovenia, Switzerland and Thailand, on ‘Human Rights Education and Training : Achievements and Perspectives’.

The side event aimed at exploring the synergies that can be developed among the various actors in this field, including mainstreaming Human Rights Education and Training into the work of the UN system.
